When configuring an old workstation PC to run ZoneMinder, I kept having the monitor blank after a few minutes of inactivity, even though I had disabled the screen savers in Xfce. This did not occur on my newer systems running amdgpu.

What the heck?

I quick scan of the interwebs archives provided the appropriate memory boost: Display Power Management (DPMS). This is a power saving function built into X that can be used to blank the monitor.

Sometimes a perfectly good good system tool goes overlooked until a particular need arises, as in the case of GkrellM. GKrellM is a GTK program to display a single process stack of system monitors. Usually I have it running on a second monitor to keep tabs on temperatures, fan speeds and various other parameters. Recently, when running with a single monitor and with programs fullscreen, I was missing being able to glance at this tool.
